Clinical Psychologist

Meet Dr. Sheryl Pierre
Psychologist for Identity, Anxiety, Overthinking & Feeling Stuck

Hi! I’m Dr. Pierre.

I’m a clinical psychologist providing therapy for teens, young adults, and adults navigating anxiety, depression, identity questions, overthinking, motivation, and difficult family relationships.

I especially enjoy working with people who have made the decision for themselves that they want to be in therapy—people who are curious about themselves, willing to talk honestly, and ready to better understand what may be keeping them stuck.

You might find yourself thinking:

“Why did I handle that situation like that?”
“Why can’t I get out of my own way?”
“How do I stop overthinking everything?”
“I have so much to do. Why can’t I just get started?”
“Why do interactions with my family affect me so much?”

Sometimes you know exactly what is bothering you. Other times, you simply know that something doesn’t feel right anymore.

That’s a perfectly good place to begin.

What Therapy With Me Is Like

My approach is warm, accepting, thoughtful, and conversational.

Therapy gives us an opportunity not only to talk about what is happening, but to become curious about why certain patterns keep happening and what might help you respond differently.

We may look at the thoughts you keep returning to, the situations you avoid, what makes it difficult to get started, how relationships affect the way you see yourself, or how anxiety or depression may be influencing your choices.

Together, we’ll work toward developing practical strategies while also creating room for greater self-understanding, confidence, and self-acceptance.

The goal isn’t simply to understand yourself intellectually.

It’s to help you get out of your head, get unstuck, and move toward a life that feels more like your own.

Identity, Self-Discovery & Figuring Out Who You Are

One of the areas I most enjoy exploring with clients is identity—the ongoing process of understanding who you are, what matters to you, and how you want to show up in your life and relationships.

Identity questions don’t belong to only one age, experience, or community.

You may be exploring your gender or sexuality. You may be reconsidering values, relationships, career choices, family roles, or expectations that once seemed settled. You may be trying to separate what you want from what other people have expected of you.

Or you may simply be realizing that the version of yourself that once fit doesn’t quite fit anymore.

Therapy provides room to explore all of that without needing to arrive with the answers.

My role isn’t to tell you who you should be. It is to help you become more curious about yourself, understand what matters to you, and make choices that feel increasingly consistent with the person you want to be.

When You Know What You Need to Do…But Still Can’t Do It

One of the most frustrating experiences is knowing exactly what needs to happen and still feeling unable to make yourself do it.

You need to respond to the text.

Start the assignment.

Make the appointment.

Go out with friends.

Deal with the thing you’ve been avoiding.

And somehow, the more you think about it, the harder it becomes to begin.

Anxiety, depression, rumination, avoidance, self-doubt, and low motivation can all contribute to that feeling of being stuck.

Rather than reducing the problem to “I need to try harder,” we’ll work to understand what is happening underneath it and identify realistic ways to begin moving forward.

Anxiety, Rumination & Overthinking

You may spend hours replaying a conversation, anticipating what could go wrong, second-guessing decisions, or trying to think your way into certainty.

Sometimes worrying even starts to change what you do—putting off texts, avoiding social plans, procrastinating on responsibilities, or not pursuing something because thinking about it has become overwhelming.

Therapy can help you recognize these patterns, change your relationship with anxious thoughts, and keep worry from making so many of your decisions for you.

Depression, Motivation & Feeling Stuck

Depression doesn’t always look like being unable to get out of bed.

Sometimes it sounds more like:

“I know I have things to do. I just can’t make myself start.”

We can work together to better understand low mood, loss of motivation, avoidance, disconnection, and the frustrating gap between knowing what you want to do and actually being able to do it.

Identity Exploration & Self-Discovery

Identity can include gender and sexuality, but it can also encompass your values, relationships, family roles, career, culture, beliefs, goals, and the broader question:

“Who am I, and how do I want to live?”

I particularly enjoy helping clients make room for those questions without rushing themselves toward an answer.

Family Relationships & Feeling Unseen

Family can be a tremendous source of connection—and also a source of stress, hurt, frustration, and confusion.

You may love your family while still feeling dismissed, overlooked, misunderstood, or unimportant within it.

Therapy can help you understand recurring family patterns, explore how those interactions affect you, distinguish what is and isn’t within your control, and think more intentionally about how you want to respond.

This work focuses on you and your experience within your relationships, rather than couples therapy.

Gender & LGBTQIA+ Identity

I provide an affirming environment for clients exploring sexual orientation and gender identity, considering coming out, navigating changes in relationships, or working toward greater acceptance and confidence in who they are.

I also work with people who are processing their own thoughts and emotions when a child, family member, friend, or partner comes out or begins a gender journey.

There does not need to be one “right” way to feel or one predetermined destination. There can simply be room to explore.

Teens, Young Adults & Adults

I particularly enjoy working with older adolescents, young adults, and adults who want to be in therapy themselves and are ready to engage in the process.

You don’t have to know exactly what you want to say before you arrive. You simply need enough curiosity to begin looking at what isn’t working and what you might want to be different.

Experience

My clinical experience has included working with children, adolescents, young adults, and adults in a variety of settings, including college counseling, crisis intervention, intensive in-home treatment, and private practice.

Throughout that work, I have helped clients navigate anxiety, mood concerns, identity exploration, family dynamics, school and work difficulties, relationships, motivation, life transitions, and other social and emotional challenges.

My approach draws from evidence-based cognitive and behavioral therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT).

Rather than using one approach in exactly the same way with everyone, I draw from these strategies to create an individualized approach based on the person in front of me and what they want to accomplish.

My interest in identity, dignity, compassion, and understanding people within the larger systems around them extends well beyond the therapy room.

I have a longstanding passion for the well-being of people, animals, and the environment, which led me to spend part of my career in Humane Education.

I previously led the Humane Education Department of the ASPCA, where I developed and supervised educational and animal-assisted interaction programs. I have presented at local, regional, and national conferences and have served as a media representative discussing issues related to humane education and animal welfare.

I also teach in academic programs focused on human-animal relationships and the connections among human well-being, animal protection, and environmental ethics.

That part of my professional life has reinforced something that is also central to my work as a psychologist: Curiosity matters. Context matters. Dignity matters. And understanding ourselves more fully can change how we relate not only to ourselves, but to the people and world around us.

Ready to Get Unstuck?

You don’t have to know exactly what the problem is—or have the perfect words to explain it—before you begin therapy.

If you’re ready to better understand yourself, spend less time stuck in your head, and start moving toward something different, I’d be glad to help you get started.

I provide in-person therapy in Moorestown, New Jersey and virtual therapy to clients throughout New Jersey and, through PSYPACT, can also work with eligible clients while they are located in participating states.

This can be especially helpful for college students and young adults whose lives don’t always stay in one place. If you head out of state for college, return home for breaks, relocate for an internship or graduate school, or begin building a life somewhere new, you may be able to continue working with the same therapist instead of having to start over simply because your location changed.

It also gives clients beyond New Jersey more flexibility to choose a therapist based on fit, expertise, and approach—not just who happens to practice nearby.

For clients navigating identity, anxiety, relationships, or major life transitions, that continuity can be particularly valuable during a stage of life when so much else may already be changing.

If you’re outside New Jersey, we can determine whether your location allows us to work together through PSYPACT.
